Abstract

A technique of automatic EEG analysis is described with reference to its application in the assessment of provocative tests in the detection of latent hepatic encephalopathy in patients with chronic liver disease. The use of tests involving morphine, neomycin, protein and ammonium acetate is described, and their relative merits are assessed. It is concluded that no wholly satisfactory EEG test has yet been devised and that with the morphine test misleading results may occur.
