Abstract

A styryl-BODIPY based receptor (SBT) has been designed and synthesized as an effectual colorimetric chemosensor for selective and rapid sensing of CN− and Cu2+ ions in semi-aqueous medium. The recognising behaviour was confirmed through colorimetric, UV-Vis and fluorescent spectroscopic studies. The synthesized receptor (SBT) exhibited eminent optical colour changes from pink to colourless and light green in presence of aqueous solutions of CN− and Cu2+ ions respectively. In the sensing of CN−, a shift in absorption peak from 555 nm to 374 nm was linearly dependent on concentration of cyanide ion in the range of 1 µM to 55 µM which results the detection limit of 1.40 µM. Along with this, optical studies indicated that sensor (SBT) had capability to sense Cu2+ ion selectively over other examined competitive cations in the range of 0.1 µM to 35 µM with limit of detection 1.45 µM. This detection limit is lower than concentration of Cu2+ ion in drinking water (31.5 µM) as recommended by WHO. Furthermore, the resulting receptor (SBT)+CN− adduct species can additionally be used for the recognition of Cu2+ ion by a colour conversion from colourless to dark blue in semi-aqueous medium.
