Abstract

Abstract Edward J. Khantzian is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School and Associate Chief of Psychiatry, Tewksbury Hospital, Tewksbury, Massachusetts. A psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, he is widely published, with the majority of his contributions on addiction appearing in the books, Addiction and the Vulnerable Self (with Kurt Halliday and William McAuliffe, 1990, The Guilford Press) and Treating Addiction as a Human Process (1999, Jason Aronson Inc.). He is particularly noted for his ideas around the self-medication hypothesis, the idea of self-care/self-management deficits, AA/fellowship groups as a corrective group therapy, and the importance of developing a modified, dynamic group therapy as a viable treatment. Dr. Khantzian was the recipient of the Massachusetts Medical Society 2002 Award for Excellence in Medical Service-“for distinguished demonstration of compassion and dedication to the medical needs of patients and/or public.”
