Abstract

Edward Black Greenshields, Montreal businessman and art collector, was a wealthy denizen of the Square Mile. The head of Greenshields Ltd., the largest dry goods wholesaler in Canada, he had many links to McGill University as a student, benefactor, member of the Board of Governors and contributor to The University Magazine. This paper is a n exploration of Greenshields' benevolent and cultural ties to McGill, primarily during a golden age of University expansion t o m 1890 to the First World War.
