Abstract

An educational programme is described dealing with — the design and selection of personal protection devices — training in the appropriate use of personal protective devices — personal hygiene procedures. The following tasks were studied: — formulation of pesticides — packing and curing of seeds — ground application of pesticides — aerial application of pesticides — associated agricultural work. A description of techniques employed for the monitoring of exposed workers and a summary of the complementary information concerning the personal habits during the time of the investigation are given. The results of the determination of biological parameters relevant to the exposure to organophosphorus and organochlorine pesticides are presented. The sampling techniques and the analyses of the pesticides in the environmental air of the different workplaces are described. The results of both investigations were used to define the efficiency of the educational program on the safe handling and use of pesticides.
