Abstract

Researchers in the field of autism are currently generating a wealth of new information which is likely to have a significant impact upon service delivery systems. Previously accepted beliefs about behaviors such as self-stimulation and echolalia are now being challenged. A review of recent empirical studies was conducted and findings in the areas of behavioral characteristics and treatment interventions are presented. Implications for the development of more effective education programs for autistic individuals are discussed in light of this body of research.
