Abstract

In this paper we will propose a pattern approach to educational assessment. To begin with, the context of classroom-based assessment will be described in order to set the stage. Then the ingredients of a so-called reference model for assessment rating and scoring in education will be presented. This reference model is based on theoretical concepts and techniques borrowed from discrete mathematics and fuzzy logic. It is the result of 8 years of research and development, including classroom experimenting with preliminary versions of the reference model. Finally, we will propose a visual pattern language which will help assessors to design their own assessment schemes compatible with the assessment task at hand.
