Abstract

This chapter discusses certain concepts central to cultural psychology and relevant to educational themes (such as the semiotic self, agency, narrative), and it suggests that it is interesting to use the notion of educational agency to refer, in a non-technical manner, to a specific type of agency in which the agent-self exercises curiosity, discovery, self-esteem, investigation, and continually recreates the self in relation to others, and the world. We have two main objectives: to discuss the recent change in the perspective of cultural psychology in relation to psychology as a science, and also how cultural psychology is based on the notion of a human being, involving the concepts of “semiotic self” and “agency.” Education is broadly considered to be a cultural institution that enables individuals to progressively develop as human beings. We also consider the notion of educational agency, in an exploratory and essayistic manner.
