Abstract
A proposed 2-year post-graduate Diploma in Childbirth Education is described. The proposed course is based on the assumptions that preparation for parenthood involves a holistic view of pregnancy, birth and the early parenthood years and that such preparation should be directed towards couples or families rather than only mothers. Also evident in the proposed Diploma is the multidisciplinary nature of the education that is required, spanning both biological and social sciences. The planning of the Diploma is described together with its conception, embryonic and fetal development and anatomy. Complications occurring during its gestation and delivery are outlined.
