Abstract

Perinatal outcome is an important indicator of obstetric care and health status. Reducing the incidence of low birth weight neonates by at least one third between 2000 and 2010 is one of the major goals of the United Nations resolution A World Fit for Children and is an important contribution toward Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 4 which is to reduce child mortality by two thirds by 2015. Local surveillance and basic epidemiology can more accurately assess perinatal outcome and identify areas to which interventions should be targeted. The aims of the present study were to identify and quantify the risk factors for low birth weight neonates and perinatal mortality in Sudan and to assess the role of sociodemographic factors.
