Abstract

The right of sick children to be cared for by appropriately trained staff has long been recognised within inpatient settings (Department of Health (DoH) 1991). However, for a variety of reasons, national guidelines are not being adhered to (Audit Commission 1993; Clothier 1994). The guidelines have mainly related to general children’s wards, and while much has been done in recent years to improve the number of qualified children’s nurses working in these areas, there remains a shortage of children’s nurses (Dickinson and Jackson 1999 ; King 2000).
