Abstract

Education in the Indonesian Army is designed to accomplish two major objectives. The first of these is to train soldiers in the technical requirements of their profession of national defence. All armies must perform this training task. The second objective is to teach, indoctrinate and reinforce the soldiers’, particularly the officers’, commitment to national development. The Indonesian Army sees itself as an institution with unique capabilities and responsibilities in nation building. Since its inception in 1945, the Army has not only accepted and embraced this double role, but has institutionalised its right to participate in both areas. In Indonesian this is called dwi fungsi — dual function.
