Abstract
362 Children, Youth and Environments Vol. 21 No. 1 (2011) ISSN: 1546-2250 Education for Sustainability in the Primary Curriculum: A Guide for Teachers Littledyke, Michael and Taylor, Neil and Eames, Chris (2009). South Yarra, Australia: Palgrave Macmillan; 262 pages. ISBN 9781420256277. Education for Sustainability in the Primary Curriculum provides a solid introduction to Education for Sustainability (EFS) for teaching practitioners and undergraduate students preparing to teach in the primary years. The 13 chapters written by the book’s co-authors and other invited authors present their collective experience of implementing EFS in Australia and New Zealand. Despite this geographic focus for the school examples, the book presents background about the sustainability movement, educational theory, and practical ideas for the classroom that are relevant to primary schools anywhere. After reviewing the context of global environmental change, responses in the field of education, and supportive models of learning and teaching, individual chapters discuss ways to integrate EFS into the teaching of science, technology, mathematics, social studies, English, the arts, and health.
