Abstract

There has been considerable development in Europe in recent years of the concept of lifelong education. An important aspect of this concept is the recognition of the special educational needs of increasing numbers of older persons who are about to retire or who have retired. The purpose of this paper is to suggest some of the considerations which educators must take into account when planning educational programmes in the light of the profound changes in the basic life-cycle pattern of education/work/retirement which is a feature of contemporary European society. A number of such programmes currently offered in some European countries including a note on the establishment of the Universities of the Third Age are presented.
