Abstract

Beginning with a brief history and account of the philosophy underlying education forinternational understanding, this paper examines why education for internationalunderstanding (EIU) is central to the mission of both UNESCO and higher educationinstitutions. It argues that EIU has much to contribute to the revitalisation of highereducation, and that higher education has much to contribute to the development ofEIU. An analysis of examples of good practice in higher education precedes a set ofsuggestions as to the strategies that might be employed to mainstream EIU in highereducation.
