Abstract

SYNOPSIS Environmental issues have recently become a major driving force throughout the UK educational system. In parallel, interest has continued to grow in what was originally called “alternative technology”, as defined below. Other linked concepts, such as “appropriate technology” or “intermediate technology” are also discussed briefly. The main aim of this paper is to examine the role of renewable energy technology as a teaching topic in the various educational sectors, with particular emphasis on the wider strategic, social and planning issues. At the same time, the need for a general public awareness of the nature and implications of renewable energy systems is also considered.
