Abstract

Journal of American CultureVolume 3, Issue 2 p. 351-373 Education and Culture in the Trans-Mississippi West: An Interpretation Ronald E. Butchart, Ronald E. Butchart Westerner by nativity and education, taught high school in Idaho for three years before taking graduate degrees in U.S. social history at Northern Arizona University and the State University of New York at Binghamton. He is an Assistant Professor at SUNY College, Cortland, New York. His research and publications focus on the history of U.S. education, particularly postbellum Southern black education and Western education. He is one of the writers for the special issue on Cultural History of the American West, and author of Northern Schools, Southern Blacks, and Reconstruction: Freedman's Education, 1862-1875, (Westport Conn.: Greenwood Press, 1980).Search for more papers by this author Ronald E.
