Abstract

Edmonton’s Fringe Theatre Event celebrated its fifth anniversay last 16 to 24 August with its most successful showing to date. Over 130,000 tickets – twice as many as last year – were sold for the 130 shows mounted on the streets and in the 13 venues of the city’s newly restored Old Strathcona district. Press coverage and media interest increased; ticket-selling was reorganized to eliminate the lengthy queues that were a problem last year; local restaurants and shops rallied strong business backing; and the crowds, judging from those I saw, went home happy.
