Abstract

EDM (Electrical discharge machining) is an advance manufacturing process for high-quality machining and produce tight tolerance product. Today requirement sustainable manufacturing for reduced environmental impact. Minimization of machining time can reduce the consumption of energy, which will reduce the environmental impact.Hence, this research work emphasized on minimization of energy consumption by reducing machining time and improve the surface finish. Minimization of energy consumption and surface roughness can be done by the optimal selection of process parameter in WEDM. In this work input parameters selected on past research work and industry experts’ suggestions with respective output responses surface roughness and machining time for Inconel 718 alloys. Input variables are pulse on time, pulse off time, wire feed, wire tension, pick current considered, this combination not considered in any research till now. This work perform an experimental design and applied the TOPSIS MCDM technique to optimize the machining process for Inconel 718 alloy. Optimum variables setting are pulse-on time 116 μs, pulse-off time 60 μs, wire feed 4 m/min, wire tension 8 gm, pick current 230 units which gave surface roughness 2.8456 µm and machining time 3 sec for cutting of Inconel 718 material with thickness 6 mm.
