Abstract

Teaching Theology and Religion reviews books on teaching and learning in higher education. This is a broad, diverse, and growing field of discourse, with a growing number of titles published each successive year. Our brief, five hundred word book reviews aim to keep busy faculty informed of broad trends in the field, and to provide a head start in deciding which books deserve deeper inspection depending on individual tastes and interests. But this service loses value the longer the delay between the publication of the book and the publication of the review. With the number of books selected for review growing, we have been falling further and further behind in the publication of our reviews. To remedy this situation, we are publishing this Special Online Supplement to issue 16:3, available online to journal subscribers in July 2013. This Special Online Supplement includes a total of sixty-four book reviews on a wide variety of topics, including: religion on campus, teaching for diversity, the vocation of teaching, characteristics of current college students, how to survive as a new faculty member, and best practices in college teaching. Since this is an online issue of the journal, we thought it fitting to make it especially rich in reviews of books on digital technology, online learning, and the professional use of social media. It seems that at least every day our book review editor receives another book or two on this topic for review. These books are important and timely – and their value is in their immediacy, as the technological revolution explodes at an ever quickening pace. This is all the more reason to publish these reviews as soon as possible. We hope you enjoy this Special Online Supplement issue of book reviews. At present we have no concrete plans for future Supplement issues, but we will not be surprised if the pattern holds and we again find ourselves with too many important book reviews to fit into our regular journal and need to provide these reviews online again through a special supplement.
