Abstract

The editorial team at Women's Health Issues is extremely pleased to publish this special supplement on sex and gender differences in veterans' health research, which is sponsored by the Veterans Affairs (VA) Cooperative Studies Program, part of the VA Office of Research and Development, and coordinated with the VA Women's Health Research Network. This supplement contains high-quality research studies and thought-provoking commentaries on a range of health topics and methodological issues. As the number of women veterans continues to grow, it is vital that we fully understand their unique health needs and disseminate meaningful research findings with implications for practice and policy. The findings in this supplement add to this knowledge base and contribute to broader efforts to improve reporting of results by sex/gender, as well as informing ongoing work to improve care for women veterans. Guest Editor-in-Chief Karen M. Goldstein, MD, MSPH, of Durham Veterans Affairs Health Care System and Duke University Medical Center, ably spearheaded this project, from the call for submissions through acceptance of final manuscripts and publication details. She led a team of guest editors who contributed expertise and judgement throughout the process: Lori A. Bastian, MD, MPH; Wei (Denise) Duan-Porter, MD, PhD; Kristen E. Gray, PhD, MS; Katherine J. Hoggatt, PhD, MPH; Grant D. Huang, MPH, PhD; Keith Humphreys, PhD; Megan M. Kelly, PhD; Ruth Klap, PhD; Sarah M. Wilson, PhD; and Elizabeth M. Yano, PhD, MSPH.
