Abstract
In “Journal Club: MRI reveals acute inflammation in cortical lesions during early MS,” Bateman et al. discussed an article that showed evidence of early leukocortical lesions in multiple sclerosis (MS), suggesting that gray matter pathology may be related to blood–brain barrier breakdown. Commenting on the journal club article, Drs. Cyprian Olchowy and Anna Olchowy point to the fact that patients in the study discussed received triple the recommended dose of gadolinium-based contrast agent (GBCA). They explain that the study started before the link between gadolinium administrations and increased signal intensity in the dentate nucleus and globus pallidus was discovered in the human brain. They add that currently, a study with monthly injections of triple-dose GBCA would not be possible due to justified safety concerns.
