Abstract

It’s now seven weeks since the government announced its intention to pay nurses only 1 per cent nationally and there is little sign that nurses’ or midwives’ anger has abated. During those weeks nurses and midwives have campaigned successfully to mobilise public and media support for their case. This week thousands of nurses will be demonstrating throughout the country in protest against the unfairness of the way their pay award has been handled. The message from nursing and midwifery organisations remains steadfast - 3 per cent with no strings attached.
