Abstract

The presented article “Testosterone and Cardiovascular Disease—a Literature Review” by Savi Shishkov and Mila Boyadzhieva provides a valuable review of the place and role of testosterone in ischemic heart disease (IHD) as well as the approaches to the problem. In light of the social significance of IHD and the knowledge that has been achieved to date, the field of cardiology is unable to answer many of the questions related to the pathogenesis of coronary heart disease (CHD). In relation to that, looking at the problem from an endocrine point of view is a valuable moment in studying ischemic heart pathology. In the current work, physiological and pathophysiological effects of testosterone in relation to its modulatory effect on the myocardium in acute and chronic ischemic pathology are reviewed. Results from a number of studies are presented. Some of the likely reasons for inconsistency in the results are discussed. The idea of multifactorial conditioning of the effect of testosterone on myocardial pathology in CHD is explored. The results of the presented studies are critically evaluated. Some directions are formulated which, to some extent, could explain part of the conflicting results. The work is written in a good style and with a thorough knowledge of the subject. The literature reference is rich—82 studies with appropriately selected sources, 21 of which are from the last 5 years.
