Abstract
The issue opens with the contributions by Matthew Finkin & Sanford Jakoby, Alan Neal, and Orsolya Farkas & Olga Rymkevitch presented at the annual colloquium of labour law journals held in Modena in April 2004 on the problems of labour mobility. The papers underline the complex and sometimes contradictory nature of policies in this field. Finkin & Jacoby explore the reasons for the differences between European and US mobility, whereas the paper by Alan Neal discusses the Nordic experience in regulating the free movement of individuals in a historical perspective, considering it a source of inspiration for the establishment of the European Union open labour market model. The paper by Farkas & Rymkevitch focuses on recent developments in European immigration policy and the choices made by the Member States relating to EU enlargement and the free movement of individuals from the new Member States.
