Abstract

This current issue of Neutron News emphasizes the contrasting perspectives existing in the field of neutron scattering throughout the world. While in the United States the first successful tests of the SNS1 Linac have just been announced (see news report by Al Ekkebus on page 38-39), a recent meeting held in Tsukuba and Tokai (see page 13) dealt with the instrumental concepts and science to be achieved at J-PARC. These fast advances in the U.S. and Japan contrast with the recent "non-decision" of the European governments to build the ESS in the near future. At the last European Conference on Neutron Scattering held in Montpellier (see page 3) two afternoon sessions focused on the future of neutron scattering, aiming to prepare a strategy at the European level.
