Abstract

EDITORIAL NOTES In the months following the 1995 Annual Meeting of the APCG at Sonoma State University, 15 papers were submitted to the Year book Editor. Of these, six were selected for publication in the 1996 issue, along with Elizabeth Bum s’ Presidential Address. These pa pers represent an extremely wide range of topics and professional interests, yet all are consistently focused on themes that are inher ently spatial— the scarlet thread of geography links them into a coherent whole in ways that are sometimes mysterious and frequently amazing. Of special note in this Yearbook is Ed Price’s final install ment of the “History of Geography Departments in the Pacific Northwest,” one of our most widely admired series, and the posthu mous publication of former APCG President and Yearbook Editor Rod Steiner’s paper on Califonia railroad stations. This will be my last issue as Yearbook editor: some (minor) health problems, a severe financial crisis at my university, and a complete lack of secretarial support this past year have conspired to divert me from my editorial tasks too often, so I am passing the torch to Darrick Danta at California State University, Northridge. I would like to use this forum one last time to thank all of the membership for their continued support over the past four years. I am most deeply indebted to my colleagues who willingly and promptly refereed papers and reviewed books for me: Jim Ashbaugh, Andy Bach, Sheryl Beach, Charles Booth, Susan Bradbury, Eliza beth Bums, Allen Bushong, Kam Wing Chan, Audrey Clarke, Howard Critchfield, Robin Datel, Dennis Dingemans, Harold Elliott, Nick Entrekin, Mike Folsom, Jerry Galm, Bill Graf, Ken Hammond, Su san Hardwick, Tom Harvey, David Hooson, Antonia Hussey, John James, Terry Jordan, Clarissa Kimber, David Lantis, John Mairs, Jonathan Mayer, Mary McDonald, Elliot Mclntire, Melinda Meade, Bob Monahan, Charles Mutschler, Risa Palm, Leland Pederson, Carolyn Prorok, Imre Quastler, Robert Quinn, Bob Richardson, Chris203 204 APCG YEARBOOK • VOLUME 58 • 1996 tine Rodrigue, Les Rowntree, Kit Salter, Carlos Schwantes, Jim Scott, Terry Simmons, Bill Speth, Paul Starrs, Dale Stradling, Fred Strange, Tom Terich, Norman Thrower, Stacy Warren, Dick Winchell, Ray Young, Jenny Zorn, and Gabor Zovanyi. I also owe special thanks to Kevin Klug of the Association of American Geographers for assistance with specialty group mailing lists; to Bob Richardson and Tim Hallinan for editorial assistance beyond the normal call of duty; to Jim Scott, who has an answer for virtually every question (or knows the person who does...); to Dale Stradling and Elwyn Lapoint, the most supportive department chairs anywhere; and especially to my wife Diane, my family, and all of my students, who had to put up with me when I was grumpy about approaching deadlines.
