Abstract

This special issue of Diplomatic History opens a dialogue between historians of foreign relations and scholars of environmental history. Diplomatic History is pleased to sponsor this forum with Environmental History. Kurk Dorsey and Mark Lytle, the guest editors of this forum, have gathered five essays that explore the ways governments and international organizations have tried to alter, regulate, and protect the environment. The articles also investigate environmental images and ideas. Two prominent historians, Donald Worster and Akira Iriye, offer insightful commentaries that highlight the connections between the disciplines of diplomatic and environmental history. The editors of both journals hope that this multidisciplinary dialogue will continue into the future as the environment remains a central issue of the twenty-first century.
