Abstract

Last year in May, the yeast research community lost one of our great minds, Professor Jurij Pi s kur. Jure, as he was known to most of us, was born in Celje, in Slovenia (Yugoslavia, at the time), and he did his undergraduate studies in biology and chemistry at the University of Ljubljana, in Slovenia and at Stockholm University in Sweden. He pursued his PhD at the Research School of Biological Sciences, Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra where he obtained his PhD in molecular genetics in 1989. Already during his BSc studies Jure gained affection for Scandinavia as he did his final research project in Stockholm, and during his time in Australia he studied Scandinavian languages and literature at the ANU.
