Editorial introductions

Abstract

Current Opinion in Critical Care was launched in 1995. It is one of a successful series of review journals whose unique format is designed to provide a systematic and critical assessment of the literature as presented in the many primary journals. The field of critical care is divided into 13 sections that are reviewed once a year. Each section is assigned a Section Editor, a leading authority in the area, who identifies the most important topics at that time. Here we are pleased to introduce the Section Editors for this issue. SECTION EDITORS Mauro OddoMauro OddoMauro Oddo is Professor of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Lausanne, Head Physician at the Department of Intensive Care Medicine, at the CHUV-Lausanne University Hospital, Switzerland. He is a general intensivist with a specific interest and expertise in neurocritical care and neuromonitoring. He is also a Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) supported researcher, Director of the Critical Care Clinical Research Unit, leading the Neuroscience Critical Care Research Group inside the same Department. His clinical research focuses on the mechanisms of energy dysfunction after acute brain injury in humans, and the use of advanced neuromonitoring techniques in metabolomics studies, Phase II translational trials, and to assess early coma prognostication. He is actively involved and regularly invited at main international postgraduate congresses of intensive care, neurocritical care and resuscitation medicine. He has published more than 180 articles in the field. Constantine J. KarvellasConstantine J. KarvellasDr Constantine J. Karvellas is an Associate Professor of Medicine (Critical Care Medicine and Gastroenterology/Hepatology) at the University of Alberta, Canada, and an Adjunct Professor in the School of Public Health Sciences. He has been an attending intensivist in the E. Garner King General Systems Intensive Care Unit since 2009 and is involved with the Liver Transplant program as a Hepatologist. Dr Karvellas is a co-investigator in the NIH-funded United States Acute Liver Failure study group (US ALFSG). He is also a Vice-chair of the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) Liver management task force. Dr Karvellas’ publications reflect his interests in acute liver failure (ALF), acute on chronic liver failure (ACLF), liver transplantation and extracorporeal liver support.
