Editorial introductions

Abstract

Current Opinion in Infectious Diseases was launched in 1988. It is part of a successful series of review journals whose unique format is designed to provide a systematic and critical assessment of the literature as presented in the many primary journals. The field of infectious diseases is divided into 11 sections that are reviewed once a year. Each section is assigned a Section Editor, a leading authority in the area, who identifies the most important topics at that time. Here we are pleased to introduce the Section Editors for this issue. SECTION EDITORS Christina M. CoyleChristina M. CoyleChristina M. Coyle, MD, MS is a Professor of Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, USA. Dr Coyle received her medical degree from SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn, USA, and completed her residency training at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and an Infectious Disease Fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, USA. She runs an active Tropical Medicine Clinic and has a clinical expertise in tropical medicine with a focus on larval tapeworms including, neurocysticercosis and echinococcus. Dr Coyle has been a surveillance site director since 2001 for Geosentinel, which is a worldwide communication and data collection network for the surveillance of travel related morbidity that was initiated in 1995 by the International Society of Travel Medicine (ISTM) and the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC). As an active member of the American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (ASMTH), she co-directs the two-day Pre-Meeting Course prior to the annual ASTMH meeting and provides an intensive update in tropical medicine to academic clinicians and other practitioners who are already experts in their fields. She is a much sought-after educator and teaches parasitology in two medical schools in New York City. Her students and peers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine have recognized her with every teaching award available to faculty. She also serves on the Infectious Disease Boards Exam Committee, lectures both nationally and internationally, and is a known expert in the clinical management of neurocysticercosis. Dr Coyle is the Assistant Dean for Faculty Development at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and a PI on the CDC award, “Reducing the Burden of Neglected Parasitic Infections (NPIs) in the United States through Evidence-Based Research, (NU2GGHOO2180)”. James Platts-MillsJames Platts-MillsDr Platts-Mills is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases and International Health at the University of Virginia, USA. His research focuses on the application of molecular diagnostics to the epidemiology of enteric diseases in children in developing countries. This work has helped define the etiology and burden of diarrheal disease and the long-term impact of early enteric infections on child growth and development, with a particular focus on Campylobacter and Shigella. He serves as a diarrheal disease expert for the Global Burden of Disease Study, sits on a WHO working group on enteric diseases burden estimation, and with colleagues at the CDC and WHO, co-founded the Global Pediatric Diarrhea Surveillance network.
