Editorial introductions

Abstract

Current Opinion in Nephrology and Hypertension was launched in 1992. It is part of a successful series of review journals whose unique format is designed to provide a systematic and critical assessment of the literature as presented in the many primary journals. The field of nephrology and hypertension is divided into 12 sections that are each reviewed once a year. Each section is assigned a Section Editor, a leading authority in the area, who identifies the most important topics at that time. Here we are pleased to introduce the Section Editors for this issue. SECTION EDITORS Sankar D. NavaneethanSankar D. NavaneethanDr Sankar D. Navaneethan received his medical degree from the Madras Medical College, India, MPH degree (epidemiology) from the University of South Carolina, USA and a MS degree in clinical research from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, USA. Following his residency, chief residency and clinical nephrology fellowship at the University of Rochester, New York, USA, in 2008 he joined the Cleveland Clinic's Department of Nephrology and Hypertension, Ohio, USA, as an Associate Staff. He also served as the Vice-Chair for Clinical and Translational Research at the Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute, Cleveland Clinic. Currently, he is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, USA and an Associate Director of the Dan L. Duncan Institute of Clinical and Translational Research, Baylor College of Medicine. His major research interests include: diabetic kidney disease, obesity and intentional weight loss in chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular disease in kidney disease, health services research and systematic reviews in nephrology. He has authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications and is currently involved in multiple clinical studies. He is on the editorial boards of several nephrology journals and is also a member of international guideline writing committees. Vivek BhallaVivek BhallaDr Vivek Bhalla received his medical degree from the University of California, San Diego, USA. He then completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, USA and clinical and research fellowships in nephrology at the University of California, San Francisco. In 2008, he moved to Stanford University, USA, where he is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Nephrology. Dr Bhalla directs a basic science research program on kidney complications of diabetes, including nephropathy and salt-sensitive hypertension using in vivo and in vitro approaches. His laboratory is currently supported by the National Institutes of Health. His clinical expertise is in hypertension and electrolyte disorders. Dr Bhalla is the founding director of the Stanford Hypertension Center, USA, an American Heart Association-certified Comprehensive Hypertension Center. He has reviewed manuscripts for numerous journals, including the Journal of American Medical Association, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Journal of Clinical Investigation, and the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. In addition to editing Current Opinion in Nephrology and Hypertension, Dr Bhalla sits on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Physiology – Renal Physiology, Physiologic Reports, and Frontiers in Renal and Epithelial Physiology. He is also Chair of the Council on Kidney and Cardiovascular Disease for the American Heart Association. Alan C. PaoAlan C. PaoDr Alan C. Pao completed his medical degree from Washington University, St. Louis, USA. Following his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Centre, Dallas, USA, he moved to University of California, San Francisco, USA, where he completed a clinical nephrology fellowship and postdoctoral training in renal physiology and signal transduction. In 2008, he joined the Stanford University School of Medicine, USA, as an Assistant Professor of Medicine. Dr Pao's basic research program focuses on signaling mechanisms by which endocrine and paracrine hormones regulate sodium and water homeostasis. His laboratory is currently funded by the National Institute of Health. Dr Pao also has a clinical research program that studies the quality of health care delivery to patients with urinary stone disease. In addition to editing Current Opinion in Nephrology and Hypertension, Dr Pao sits on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Physiology – Renal Physiology, Physiology Reports, and Frontiers in Renal and Epithelial Physiology. He has served as program chair of the Western Epithelial Biology Society, formerly known as West Coast Salt and Water Club, and currently serves on the Awards Committee for the American Heart Association Council on the Kidney in Cardiovascular Disease.
