Introduction

Specialty section: This article was submitted to Language Sciences, a section of the journal Frontiers in Psychology. Demonstratives play an important role in the encoding of reference in space (Coventry et al, 2008) and the organization of linguistic elements in discourse (Himmelmann, 1997). These features characterize demonstratives as a very special class of linguistic items that are foundational to communication, spatial orientation, discourse processing, language acquisition, and the emergence of grammar.
