Abstract

Diversity characterizes this issue. The breadth of interest which a teacher of arithmetic must have is amazing when you begin to list the topics. Herbart introduced the term “many-sided” into the educational literature over one hundred years ago. We now recognize even single fields of knowledge as many-sided. If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, it might also be said that a point of view is in the eye of the viewer. For instance, a topic new to many elementary teachers is developed in two articles. Salsburg uses the notion of a modulus to introduce several simple theorems about number from a rather ingenious point of view, and Hildebrand uses the same mathematical notion as a vehicle for an excellent illustration of induction and discovery.
