Abstract

Transrectal ultrasound guided prostate needle biopsy is the standard prostate cancer diagnostic modality. Over the past decades, there has been an evolution of biopsy needle technology, number of cores taken, and improvements in pre-biopsy imaging to help with lesion identification. The goal is to identify clinically significant prostate cancers while decreasing those that are clinically insignificant, minimize both infectious, and non–infectious complications, and provide a tolerable procedure in terms of pain control, bleeding, and urinary function post-biopsy.
