Abstract

The Internet has become ubiquitous in our culture and is becoming part and parcel of the decision making that patients are using to select their doctor/urologist. The authors have pointed out that access to care, hospital reputation, and insurance coverage are the leading reasons patients offer as an explanation for their selection of a urologist and hospital. It is of interest that the urologist has control over the first 2 reasons, that is, access and reputation. The take-home message should clearly be that we must make our practices accessible to our patients even with the challenge of increasing numbers of baby boomers—10,000 US men and women reaching age 65 each day and this daily rate is likely to continue until 2030. 1 Pew research Center. https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2010/12/29/baby-boomers-retire/ Google Scholar In addition, there is a decrease in the number of American urologists secondary to the early retirement of middle age and older urologists and failure to adequately increase the number of residency positions which are currently at 339 positions/y. 2 Personal communication, Dr. Raju Thomas, President Elect AUA Google Scholar
