Abstract

This and the following manuscript not only provide a comprehensive road map for urologic providers treating girls and young women with SB, but highlight some of the inherent challenges for both patient and provider. In the United States, pediatric urologists train up through urology training programs, where the sexual health focus is disproportionately on men's health. As such, many pediatric urologists feel ill-equipped to educate female patients about sexual health much less discuss and treat sexual dysfunction and navigate obstetric and gynecologic care. The complexity of these challenges from a provider perspective are amplified in the pediatric SB population, where societal and parental expectations around sexuality and disabilities may further hinder providers from broaching the topic and parents from partnering with health care professionals on this issue. As the authors emphasize, however, precocious puberty, social isolation, and increased risk for sexual abuse all make sexual education and screening for females with SB all the more important. These recommendations provide a step-wise approaches based on age and developmental level of the patient and specific anatomic and physiological conditions and serve as important resources for the provider team. Most importantly, both of these manuscripts emphasize the importance of partnering with sexual health professionals outside of urology for patients who require skills knowledge beyond those of the providing urologist. Like all SB care, sexual health screening, education and obstetric care should be considered a team effort. Kudos to both author teams on these important contributions to our field and their ongoing work to further holistic care for our young SB patients.
