Abstract

The authors1 performed a meta-analysis comparing outcomes of shock wave lithotripsy and ureteroscopic lithotripsy for stones >10 mm. A higher initial stone-free rate and lower retreatment rate were found for those treated ureteroscopically; complications were similar between the 2 groups. An important consideration, alluded to in the discussion, is that shock wave lithotripsy technology has remained stagnant with the Dornier HM3 lithotripter, still considered the gold standard in terms of efficacy.
