Abstract

The article, “A Legal Database Review of Circumcision Related Litigation in the United States,” is a thorough assessment of the multitude of competing controversies surrounding the health benefits, as well as ethical considerations, of circumcision. The finding that negligent surgical performance was most egregious was curious, as circumcision is not considered a very complex procedure. What is defined as poor performance may simply be misjudged expectations by the patient or parents. This is particularly prescient given the study findings that the majority (20%) of surgical “complications” was merely poor aesthetic appearance that could have been addressed during the preoperative counseling session.
