Abstract

The penis is an engineering marvel. No other organ in the body can duplicate what it can do, that is, increase its blood flow approximately 40-50 times within a few seconds and then store this increased blood volume until its presumed function is completed.1 This remarkable ability is dependent primarily on the function of the smooth muscle within the media of the cavernosal arteries and the cavernosal bodies. When these bodies of smooth muscle relax, the penis does what it is supposed to do: attain and maintain the erectile response.
