Abstract

This report stimulated enthusiastic comment from one reviewer who noted that it "presents an innovative approach to a problem troubling all academic departments and their part-time clinical faculty." While many pediatric departments are doing many of the things noted in this paper to improve communications between town and gown, the "new" feature is the formal organization of the clinical faculty. In many ways the report is a promisory note, and we still need an evaluation of its effectiveness on both part-time faculty and students. However, the communication should stimulate other departments to try methods of melding town and gown relations. Hopefully, such projects will include a careful evaluation of how well they work.
