Abstract
In their retrospective institutional case series, Palumbo et al present their experience with an enhanced recovery protocol following open radical cystectomy. In a cohort of 74 patients on protocol, the authors report significant improvements in bowel recovery as compared with a preintervention cohort. Indeed, half of the patients on the enhanced recovery pathway experienced bowel movements by the third postoperative day, whereas none achieved this outcome preintervention. The enhanced recovery protocol was also associated with a 3-day reduction in mean inpatient length of stay.
