Abstract
This series from the University of Southern California (USC) Department of Urology emphasizes the reproducible effectiveness of open radical prostatectomy (ORP) in the management of prostate cancer. As the reference standard treatment for localized prostate cancer, it is curious that ORP with pelvic lymph node dissection has largely been abandoned for robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RARP). It would appear that those extrapolating the results of open surgery to support a robotic approach are justified: removing the entire prostate gland by any technique should produce the same results. However, reasons exist—supported by this series from USC—to question such an extrapolation. Long-term Outcomes of Open Radical Retropubic Prostatectomy for Clinically Localized Prostate Cancer in the Prostate-specific Antigen EraUrologyVol. 79Issue 3PreviewTo determine long-term oncological outcomes and complication rates for patients with clinically organ confined prostate adenocarcinoma (PCa) treated with open radical retropubic prostatectomy and pelvic lymph node dissection (RRP/PLND) in the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) era.
