Abstract

This editor, who received his MD degree in 1921, and who during the immediately subsequent years was made aware of "Mehlnährschaden" and "Milchnährshaden," both by his teacher, John Howland, and also by his readings of the writings of Czerny and of Finklestein, is not only nostalgic over the content of Dr. Pesé's letter, but delighted to be able to support his conviction that during this period a disorder that has now come to be called "kwashiorkor" was recognized by at least the elite of this country and catalogued under the heading of either "mehlnährschaden" or "nutritional edema." The editor also recalls such terms as: edema disease, war edema, hunger edema, privational edema, along with similar names which collectively are a catalog of human adversity. He perhaps may be pardoned for questioning the justification for creating a new nosologic term, kwashiorkor, for a disorder that was well known and carefully described
