Abstract

In this large study of US urology residents nearly half of respondents met the criteria for professional burnout, with prevalence peaking in the PGY2 year and decreasing with progression through residency. These data are certainly not surprising, as in most programs the greatest burden of call is born by the PGY2 class, but may serve as an impetus for programs to rethink the support they offer (or do not offer) for junior trainees. In addition, the authors offer data-supported suggestions for improvement: When given a list of potential resources, the majority of respondents selected access to on-call meals, dedicated on-call sleeping rooms, and ability to attend personal medical appointments as factors that might improve well-being.
