Abstract

Prophylactic perioperative open-ended ureteral stent placement is commonly performed prior to major pelvic and abdominal surgery. Several retrospective studies and a recent meta-analysis including 98,507 patients have not demonstrated a clear difference in the risk of ureteral injury among stented versus unstented patients (OR 1.30, 95% CI 0.39-4.29).1 However these studies are highly subject to selection bias. Many surgeons believe that prophylactic stenting can ease intraoperative ureteral visualization and early identification of injuries, and they continue to request stents in select cases.
