Abstract
Once the province of missionaries and plastic surgeons, international surgical volunteerism has evolved under the umbrella term, “Global Surgery” to include both international and domestic outreach programs to low resource settings. It is inclusive of short-term surgical camps, long-term academic collaborations, research, professional societal exchanges and interprofessional networks, as well as advocacy and policy engagement. In academics, an ever-expanding number of global surgery training programs are taking root within departments of surgery, and faculty engagement is beginning to be seen not as a hobby or vacation activity but as a legitimate piece of an academic portfolio, with endowed chairs in global surgery and specialties now becoming part of the of the landscape.
