Abstract

Although termed a “never event” wrong-side surgeries continue to occur. Site marking helps to avoid such an event by providing a visual cue as an incision is about to be made. Unfortunately, when performing a urologic endoscopic procedure the site that was marked is typically covered with drapes and completely obscured. Furthermore, as vision is often limited to what is on the video screen, others in the operating room do not have the ability to “see” which side of the patient the procedure is being performed on. Finally, as surgeons standing between the legs of the patient, the patients “right” is our “left” and their “left” is our “right”; things can get confusing. Wrong-side ureteroscopy, ureteropyeolography, and stent placement can occur. Even the best surgeon who has marked the laterality and done a time out can be distracted or confused.
