Abstract

It is worth reminding ourselves that the Health Professions Council (HPC) is there to protect the public and has no function in protecting the Registrants (ie Radiographers). The HPC will investigate allegations made against a Registrant, however it is accepted there must be a balance struck between protecting the public and the human rights of the Registrant. The HPC must therefore have proportionality and reasonableness and the HPC must not pursue malicious or vexatious claims against Registrants. The Regulator (HPC) must be seen to be kept very separate from a Professional Body or Trade Union, in other words the HPC in effect conducts the ‘prosecution’ and the Trade Union or Professional Body the ‘defence’. Being a member of a union, such as the SCoR, is highly recommended.
