Abstract

In spite of the emphasis in evangelical circles on Christ’s missionary mandate to his disciples in Matthew 28, the bond between the cosmic authority asserted in verse 18 and the church, to which the mission is entrusted in verses 19–20, is not always acknowledged as it should be. Misunderstanding or lack of precision about this point runs the risk of distorting the reason for the missionary mandate, namely by displacing it from its christological focus. We will clarify the precise nature of the bond between Christ’s authority and the church by an examination of the passage’s fourfold declaration of authority, which reinforces the passage in question and uncover how this bond establishes the New Testament church as well.
